Roughriders 23 Bombers 19

When you live in BC and the Lions are not playing in the Grey Cup it's pretty much more about the snacks at the party than the game. Here's a case in point with Ken, whom we seldom see on their Blog, with his hand caught in the Chip bowl! Obviously with libations also close at hand, this was his favourite part of the game. Especially true since we heard him say a number of times that he's an Argonaut fan! Have a good trip to Alberta Pat and don't worry about Ken. We'll take good care of him!

Denman Island Exploration

After a medical appointment in Courtenay yesterday, we started driving down the Island Highway when we noticed the small car ferry coming on its run from Denman Island to Buckley Bay. A quick check of the schedule showed it would be returning to Denman in about 15 minutes and as Denman has been on our "to do" list for quite a long while we decided to do it. It's a 10 minute, $15.00 return trip and the crossing was smooth and quick. Then we went where the nose of the car took us.
First we found a deserted beach for Max at Fillongley Park where he was able to tease the lapping water and sniff to his heart's content. To get to the park we had to drive though a tunnel of trees and, sure enough, the ocean side park was the light at the end of the tunnel. From here we meandered to and fro until we came upon the trail head leading through Boyle Point Provincial Park. We followed the trail to the precipice of the point where we had an amazing view of the Lighthouse on Chrome Island. We're not sure if any of B.C.'s lighthouses are any longer manned 24/7, but this one certainly looks well maintained with hydro lines running to it to power the light. After walking back to the car we mosey'd back to Denman village where we stopped for a coffee at the General Store before returning to Vancouver Island and our ferry home. We're glad we took the time to visit a place we'd never been and had a great day!

Reflections of Desolation

On September 9th we took a guided tour of Desolation Sound. We were with Lloyd & Gerry Clark from Kelowna, our neighbor Barb Brunlees and their home helper Carolina. The boat operator was Christine from Terracentric Adventure Tours and she was accompanied by Heather Harbord who has recently published a new book, Desolation Sound - A History. She gave short talks along the way and it was very interesting. It was a gorgeous day and we were especially happy with these pictures. Enlargements can be viewed by double-clicking one of the pictures, which will open the Web Album. Then you can click on the Slideshow.

Lund 7,7,07

Today we picked up Marv & Kathy for an afternoon drive to Lund. One of our favourite places where the Pacific Coast Highway ends; or begins. Something is always happening here and photo opportunities abound, especially when the tide is low. Today was no different. Kathy pointed out the uniqueness of the little building at the top of the boat launch ramp that appears to be sitting on the mural. While we've noticed the building every time we go to Lund, we've never really seen it! Look at the picture closely and tell us what you see and how you see it.
The old restaurant at the end of the boardwalk has reopened as The Boardwalk Restaurant. It was finally purchased by a retired couple from Brisbane, Australia who've only been here for 4 weeks. In that time they completely renovated the place after gutting out the old fixtures, etc. An Australian national TV network filmed the reno in progress for one of their programs called "See the Change", about Aussies moving to other parts of the world to undertake new ventures. We took the time to sample the homemade apple pie and icecream for our coffee break. We almost decided we'd have to walk home to burn off the calories, but cooler heads prevailed.
We did our best taking the pictures. Now, if we only knew some professional photographers we'd invite them to visit to take advantage of the beautiful sights!

Canada Day Powell River Way

We spent some time at Willingdon Beach Sunday afternoon. The weather cooperated and a good time was held by all.

Sea Kayak Demo Day

Today was Kayak Demo Day at Willingdon Beach! Lots of fun and definitely something we're going to look at getting into. The question is, "Do we get a tandem boat where we are together, or 2 single boats?" We'll do some more shopping, do a couple of rental trips with a lesson or two before making a decision. This is certainly becoming a very popular past time!

Big Cat!

Unfortunately this guy/girl crossed the line to prey upon farm animals near Powell River. The picture was taken a block from where we live.

FO's

Not only are the Snowbirds back from California and Mexico, they're back from Moose Jaw.
They have a daily practice over CFB Comox with the Vancouver Island mountains as their backdrop. This pic is taken from our driveway 17 - 18 miles away.

By the way, "FO's" stands for Flying Objects (as if you didn't know).

First Hummingbird of Spring

We hung up our hummingbird feeder a week ago and this morning saw that the sugar water was all gone. We refilled the feeder and just after supper were rewarded with a pair of Hummers eagerly attacking the feeder.

Max Dogsitting Karmen

Our neighbours are holidaying in Palm Springs and Karmen, their Shih Tzu is staying with Max.
She's half his size but pretty much rules. He tolerates her. As usual, he's very camera shy.

The Cat

This cool first day of Spring afternoon I went for a walk along Willingdon Beach Trail with the New Hip(py) and Max. This trail is spotted with logging artifacts and as we passed this one, Max turned around to say, "Now that's a CAT!!"

Spring?

Can it be that Spring Time has arrived in Powell River?
We could almost watch as these cherry blossoms burst into bloom this afternoon in the Grief Point area of town. It seems Grief Point is always a few days ahead of the higher elevations; where we happen to live!

Log Booms Waiting

This afternoon there were large log booms with their tugs tied up offshore along Marine Avenue near the look-out. There are pylons anchored here to allow the tugs to tie-up for various reasons; to wait for calmer seas because of weather, or possibly to wait their turn at the booming grounds where they are to drop the tows. Today was rather a unique situation as 3 tugs were there; a fairly large one (Papa Tug), a middle size tug (Mama Tug) and a small tug (Baby Tug). The last picture is of the ferry about ready to leave for Comox.
This gave us an opportunity to try the new camera! Click on the pics to enlarge them.

Right to Play Poster Girls

During November and December, 2006, our daughter-in-law became involved with "Right to Play" and she and Brian traveled to the Toronto area to attend a Skating with Celebrities fund raising event. When they got back to Red Deer Elizabeth started raising money for the cause and soon recruited her nieces, Karley and Kelsey. The result! They ended up raising the most individual amount of anyone else in Canada! Almost $5,000 in less than 2 months; just before Christmas! WOW, WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT!
For more information about "Right to Play" visit the web site and read about Liz, Karley and Kelsey. Liz is now working on having their story published in the Red Deer Advocate and they had their picture done in anticipation of that publication.
Also, if you navigate around the Right to Play Canada web page you'll see the link to the Spirit of Hockey calendar that was developed by Brian and Elizabeth. They are donating a portion of the sales of this calendar to Right Play. A postscript to the launch of the calendar is that they sent a couple of them to Ron McLean (whom they know from growing up in Red Deer) and Don Cherry. They've since received a neat little personal e-mail message from Cherry telling them how much he enjoyed getting the calendar. If you'd like to see more of Brian & Elizabeth's work go to their website.
Go to the Links located in the Sidebar on the right hand side of this page to access Right to Play and Urlacher Photographics.
